At his 132nd attempt, Mark Webber secured his maiden pole position on Saturday, beating Rubens Barrichello to the best time in a chaotic weather-affected qualifying session in Germany.

"It was very, very chaotic so to deliver a time when it counted was very important to me," said the 32-year-old Red Bull driver.

His teammate Sebastian Vettel, 3.5 points ahead of him in the drivers' championship, qualified just fifth.

"I'm not frustrated, but it was possible to go better. The last lap I had wasn't magnificent so I blame myself, not the car," the young German told the BBC.

Championship leader Jenson Button qualified third, behind the sister Brawn, as the both of them struggled to get temperature into the Bridgestone tyres.

"Tomorrow is going to be an interesting one," said the Briton. "Weather looks similar to today so it's a little bit of luck, but also looking at what everyone else is doing and trying to make the best out of the situation."

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton carried his strong form powered by significant improvements to his McLaren into a credible fifth spot on the grid.

"We won't take it for granted but we're going to enjoy it," he said. "The guys have worked so hard and it's so much better. It's a great result for us."

Adrian Sutil qualified an amazing seventh for Force India ahead of both Ferraris, while Nelson Piquet out-qualified his Renault teammate for the first time.

Toro Rosso's Sebastien Bourdais is dead last on the grid for possibly his final grand prix.
