Former Renault engineer Pat Symonds said of his new team that they have "a mountain to climb" in 2012, if they are to compete with the big names of the sport.

Symonds has put the emphasis on the fact Marussia is effectively a craftsman, compared the likes of the Red Bull, Lotus and Mercedes, who employ well over twice as many people.

"Marussia in total employs about 170 people - compared to about 650 for Red Bull and 550 for Lotus and Mercedes. It's an enormous challenge, and we have a mountain to climb, but there is so much good spirit and ambition and I'm thoroughly enjoying it," Symonds was quoted saying on Autosport.com.

The famous tactician brain, now a consultant at Marussia, also expressed his feelings towards his team's technical partnership with the mighty McLaren name.

"Our alliance with McLaren is […] a good thing. It was obvious we had to do something different; that we weren't going to achieve the timescales required without doing that. McLaren will not be an instant [change in form] but it will maybe make us faster."
