Sebastian Vettel settled back on pole position as Formula 1 comes back from its long summer break.

His teammate Mark Webber, who was confirmed at Red Bull for 2012 earlier today, settled in third position behind McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton.

If Hamilton warmed up the pole position spot for Vettel for quite some time, his teammate Jenson Button was less lucky, even missing Q3. He will start from the 14th spot on the grid.

Felipe Massa registered a fourth position for Ferrari with his teammate Fernando Alonso in 8th only. Between them the Mercedes, Toro Rosso and Renault cars of Nico Rosberg, Jaime Alguersuari and Bruno Senna, who will take Nick Heidfeld's seat for (likely) the rest of the 2011 season.

Sauber driver Sergio Perez and Renault's Vitaly Petrov wrapped-up the top-10 of this qualifying session that started on a wet track but slowly improved enough for all drivers of Q3 to roll on slicks.

Michael Schumacher crashed his Mercedes car between turn 7 and 8 in Q1. He will start from dead last if race controls even allow him to start: it was his first flying lap, meaning he has no registered time for this qualifying session.

And Pastor Maldonado could be thrown out of the Belgian grand prix for crashing into Lewis Hamilton as they climbed the hill to Eau Rouge in qualifying.

The Williams driver had collided lightly with his British rival as the McLaren passed him at the end of Q2. Hamilton, who managed to qualify second after makeshift repairs, said on the radio that the move was "done deliberately".
