Championship leader Jenson Button on Saturday qualified just fifth for his home British grand prix, as Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel capped his dominance of the weekend so far with pole position.

Briton Button, with a 26-point in the championship, and 32 ahead of German Vettel, struggled with "low grip" but also bemoaned his Brawn team's "odd decision" to call him into the pits early.

"Qualifying was not fantastic -- but that's the way it was," he said.

Button's teammate Rubens Barrichello is a few tenths up the road in second, ahead of an angry Mark Webber, who shook his fist at a slowing Kimi Raikkonen on his final qualifying hot lap.

Australian Webber accused the Finn of "drinking vodka" or "dreaming" on the racing line before Stowe corner.

Lewis Hamilton's 19th is the worst grid position of his entire F1 career, as his attempt in Q1 was marred by the red flag brought out by his friend Adrian Sutil's big crash at Vale.

The German, who reported brake failure in his destroyed Force India, had a mandatory visit to the medical centre but was given the all-clear.
