German driver and reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel put his Renault-powered Red Bull RB7 in first place at the end of the first day of free practice at the Grand Prix of Singapore.
In the morning, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in the shortened session. Race organisers faces some issues with the deteriorating track and problems with the kerbing. For that reason, practice was reduced to just 60 minutes.
Hamilton beat Vettel for first place with a time of 1m48.599s.Vettel finished in second place, with teammate Mark Webber third.
Aerodynamic work early in the session meant Fernando Alonso only had a few flying laps in his Ferrari. He took fourth, ahead of Jenson Button (McLaren) and Massa (Ferrari).
Heikki Kovalainen's Lotus came to a halt with its front brakes on fire, causing the session to be red flagged.
After the lunch break, Vettel set the fastest time in the second session until the Ferraris went fastest on super soft tires. But Vettel regained the top spot with a time of 1m46.374s, putting him on top by 0.201s over Alonso. With the top teams all switching to long runs thereafter, Vettel's position was safe.
Hamilton was third while Button ended his day early when he stalled the engine after going straight in a corner.
Massa was fourth ahead of Webber, Michael Schumacher (Mercedes GP), Adrian Sutil's Force India and the Saubers of Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi.
