The pole sitter, Sebastian Vettel, wins the Japanese grand prix, but Mark Webber, second, extends his lead to 14 points, as Fernando Alonso finished third.

That handy points margin for Mark Webber is over both Ferrari's Alonso and Sebastian Vettel, who are level-pegging on 206 points.

"The last two races were a little bit difficult for us but we came here with quite some confidence. This track is kind of made for us," said the delighted Sebastian Vettel, who also won from pole in 2009.

Lewis Hamilton drops from third in the championship to fourth, after a nightmare weekend topped off by another gearbox problem that caused him to lose pace and voluntarily yield fourth place in the race to his teammate Jenson Button. Briton Lewis Hamilton is now 28 points behind and faces another five-place grid drop in Korea if his gearbox needs to be replaced again.

Jenson Button in the sister car is a further three points adrift, but team boss Martin Whitmarsh is not giving up. "We're still pushing hard. Anything can happen, it's that close a championship," said the McLaren chief on BBC television.

Terrible race for Renault with two retirements. After a good start, Robert Kubica second behind Vettel, lost his right rear wheel after three laps and has been forced to stop along the track. Vitaly Petrov had an accident at the start with Nico Hulkenberg (Williams). Felipe Massa (Ferrari) and Tonio Liuzzi (Force India) where involuntarily involved in the crash and had to stop their races.

The Japanese Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber) made some beautiful pass in front of his fans and finishes seventh. Nick Heidfeld at the wheel of the second Sauber is eighth and scores his firsts points of the season.

First of the little teams, Heikki Kovalainen finishes at an important twelfth position for his team Lotus.
