F1 Technique: Flexible wings are not the secret weapon of the Red Bull (+photos)

“The Red Bull has no single secret in my humble opinion, just thoroughly optimised everywhere,” said the engineer.

“I think the flexible wing theory is a red herring. We tried it two years ago and the problem with straightforward flexibility is that it produces more downforce when you least need it (at speed on the straight) and none when every gram helps in the slower corners,” he said.

“It was worth 0.1 second, may be 0.2 over the stiffest wing we could make,” he told Auto123.com.

“What would help would be anything that let the front wing or front ride height to move non-linearly and always remain as low as possible for the fuel load. However, there is no legal way to achieve this that I can think of,” concluded the engineer.
