F2: Mirko Bortolotti takes title in Monza

Italian driver Mirko Bortolotti secured the 2011 Formula 2 title following the two rounds presented in Monza. He will be rewarded by a test aboard the Williams F1.

In race 1, Mihai Marinescu captured his first F2 win. After he started from pole position, the Romanian driver lost one position to Alex Brundle, but was able to take the lead back before the end of the first lap.

Finally, Marinescu maintained the lead until the checkered flag. Behind him, Bortolotti moved up to second ahead of Brundle, and got closer to the title.

On Sunday, Bortolotti took pole position for race 2. At the start, it was his turn to lose one position, but he managed to retake the lead in front of Ramon Pineiro before the end of the first lap. Bortolotti took an easy win, and secured the 2011 title even with two rounds remaining. Pineiro took second in front of fellow countryman Miki Monras.

After Andy Soucek (2009) and Dean Stoneman (2010), Mirko Bortolottti becomes the third champion of the Formula 2 « new era ». He will drive the Williams F1 for a test in Abu Dhabi.
