According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has raised to 7.8 million the number of vehicles equipped with potentially faulty airbags made by Takata. Affected owners are urged to take immediate action to fix the problem.

As previously reported, the airbag inflators can fill with excessive pressure during a crash and explode, sending metal fragments into the face of the driver or the front passenger.

The NHTSA claims that over 12 million vehicles worldwide could be equipped with these airbags.

Automakers will notify affected owners in the next few weeks.
