2000 to 2006 Toyota Matrix
The Draw: This small crossover packed Toyota’s reputation for reliability into a lifestyle-focused, high-functionality package available with front or All-Wheel Drive (AWD). Look for 428 litres of cargo space, and a 1.8L engine. The XRS model offered more horsepower and performance. Automatic or manual transmissions were both available, depending on the model. Flexibility and a fun-to-drive attitude are highly rated by Matrix owners, as is relatively decent fuel consumption and wintertime traction in models equipped with the AWD system. Generous at-hand storage facilities were also highly rated.
What to Check: Watch for a check engine light, which could indicate a number of problems including an emissions control fault or a bad oxygen sensor. Be sure to note the engine’s idling as well. It should be smooth and steady at around 700 rpm.
With an automatic transmission, ensure that shifts occur with minimal hesitation and that no “slippage” is present. With a manual, be sure the clutch take-up feels smooth and positive, with no unusual noises or slipping. Tires should be evenly worn across the treads, and any heavy wear concentrated to one side of either tire could indicate an alignment issue.
Check body panel edges, especially lower ones, for signs of rust, and ensure the hydraulic struts that hold the tailgate and glass open do so properly.
