The Draw: The Mazda5 is what some folks call a mini minivan. It’s got a rear liftgate, sliding doors, and three rows of seating, but unlike most minivans, you can get a manual transmission to go with the standard 4-cylinder engine -- namely a 2.3L 4-cylinder with 153 horsepower. The availability of a manual transmission, good handling, relatively generous room, good mileage, interior layout, and easy-to-maneuovre sizing are all highly rated by Mazda5 owners. High levels of comfort and flexibility are also noted in this city-friendly family-hauler.
What to Check: Brake wear, tire wear, and alignment issues are somewhat common here, so be sure to check the condition of the used Mazda5’s tires and brakes with the help of a mechanic, if need be. Ensure the CD player accepts and ejects discs properly, using a CD you’re not fond of to check -- just in case. Ensure proper operation of the steering-wheel mounted controls and remote door locks. Note that any steering heaviness or hesitation is likely the result of a faulty power-steering pump, which your favourite Mazda dealer can check out for you.
