Ferrari willsoon launch what it calls the ''world's fastest convertible berlinetta in Canada and the U.S.,'' with ''fastest'' referringto more than its road speed.

When it makesappearances at the LA and Detroit auto shows in January, the Pininfarina-designed,limited-edited, ultra-expensive Ferrari Superamerica will be capable of going320 kmh and of putting its roof down in 10 seconds.

According to Luca Dal Monte ofFerrari North America, the ''Superamerica is the first production car to adoptan innovative rotating roof movement in combination with electrochromic technologydeveloped exclusively for glass surfaces of these dimensions, with SaintGobain.''

The Superamerica's unusual electricroof has been dubbed ''Revocromico''to ''highlight the unique combination of its rearward rotation movement andelectrochromic technology,'' Dal Monte says. ''It has a carbon-fibre structureand the trunk capacity remains unchanged whether the roof is open or closed. The glass rear window also acts as a highly effective wind deflector when theroof is open.''

Furthermore, the use ofelectrochromic glass means the driver can completely control the level of lightentering the cockpit. Dal Monte says ''there are five tint levels available andthe glass can go from dark to light in under a minute, at the touch of a button.''

Derived from the 575M Maranello, theSuperamerica is available with either an F1-style or manual gearbox. Its big12-cylinder engine has been boosted to deliver 540 hp.

The new car can also be fitted withthe GTC Handling package, Dal Monte says, which offers Ferrari's very latesthigh-tech features including carbon ceramic brakes.

The car should be on sale in Canada sometimein 2005.
