America's favourite extended-range electric vehicle is making headlines for the wrong reasons this week. After offering replacement cars to Chevrolet Volt owners worried about potential fire hazards, General Motors is now willing to buy them back!
CEO Dan Akerson made this shocking statement in an interview for the Associated Press, claiming that GM is focused on the satisfaction and peace of mind of its customers.
Once again, he insisted that the Volt is safe and reminded people that the crash tests which led to the fires went beyond the normal testing standard.
"I think in the interest of General Motors, the industry, the electrification of the car, it's best to get it right now than when you have – instead of 6,000 – 60,000 or 600,000 cars on the road," Akerson said.
If necessary, he added, GM will recall all the Volts now on the road in the US and repair them once the automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) figure out what caused the fires.
