An optional, 290-watt "audiophile quality" system features a 6-disc in-dash CD player and seven speakers, including two coaxial tweeter/midrange speaker sets in the front doors, two single rear door speakers, and a subwoofer.

The sole powertrain for the 2001 Explorer Sport is the 4.0L SOHC V-6, which produces 206 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 238 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm and is attached to a 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

This transmission sends power to only the rear wheels in the 4x2 configuration, or to whichever wheels have traction in the 4x4 configuration.

To improve the ride and reduce cabin noise in the 2001 Explorer Sport over today's model, Ford stiffened the frame, which should improve vehicle dynamics and contribute to lower noise, vibration and harshness.

A sound dampening floor system helps block noise from entering the passenger compartment, and the instrument panel and laminated dash sheet metal are designed to reduce the transfer of engine noise to the passenger cabin.

That feeling of confidence Ford was after should be helped by standard front and rear stabilizer bars and the modified front caster that is supposed to improve drift/pull characteristics. At the same time, revised shock tuning and a new multi-stage rear leaf spring suspension reduce ride harshness.
