Ford says their E-Series van has been a commercial leader in the US for nearly 30 years, with a 40 percent market share and loyal customer base. The Ohio-built utility van is about to start working even harder and more intelligently than ever before- thanks to an update for 2009.

The update sees the model made available with new features like an integrated navigation system, redesigned instrument cluster, customizable up-fitter switches, wider-opening rear doors and more comfortable seats. Engine fueling flexibility and safety features have been enhanced as well.

A newly-announced group of features called Ford Work Solutions will be available too. Some of these features are industry-firsts, and will allow customers the connectivity, flexibility and security to better run key aspects of their business.

Items available under the Ford Work Solutions umbrella include an in-dash, internet-equipped computer and printer, as well as a security system allowing large items to be fastened to the vehicle with high-strength cables.

Ford's added a system called Tool Link as well. It tells owners exactly which items are on board the van at any given time- working with tools that have been encoded with a special Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag. This is read by an on board scanner, which associates the tag to a certain item in real time. Simply adding or removing an item or tool tool from the back of the van updates the inventory- no manual scanning or bar-codes required.

According to Ford, the updates came naturally, after listening to customers of the popular van.

"Continuously listening to our customers and delivering solutions to meet their unique vehicle and business needs are the driving forces behind Ford's commercial vehicle leadership," said Kevin Koswick, who heads Ford's Fleet, Lease and Remarketing operations.

The updated E-Series goes on sale this summer.
