Arriving at the Mosport Driver Development Track (DDT), we had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the awesome (I’m sorry, but there is no other word!) 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec sedan. What a machine! When I say “get behind the wheel”, the company actually allowed us to drag race them! Not only that but, as the drag lanes were divided by traffic cones, one crazy journo even got to slalom the large sedan… Boy, was that ever fun! I tell you, if I was considering a BMW 5 Series or something along those lines, I think this hardcore Hyundai would have to be on the list of possibilities.
We were then let loose on the Mosport Driver Development Track in a number of Genesis Coupes. For those of you who haven’t experienced this wicked little rear-wheel drive coupe, you’ve been missing out big time. We were driving the more powerful 3.8L V6 models, but the 2.0T offers just as fun on a smaller track. In fact, for tight slalom work in amongst the cones, I’d actually prefer the 2.0L as I find it a tad lighter on the steering and slightly more nimble.
The day ended with a return to head office in the Elantra and I still had a huge grin on my face as I handed in my key. It truly was an enjoyable day and demonstrated just how far the company has come. The days of basic Hyundai transportation are long gone and automotive fun is now available to everyone, not just the well-heeled!
