Near closing-down is apparently not enough to restrain General Motors for participating to Sports Car Championships.
General Motors was just confirmed as the fifth manufacturer, with Ford, Porsche, Viper and Volvo, running for the Speed World Challenge GT Championship. GM has Chevrolet Corvettes and Pontiac GTOs on the track.
The two podiums of Eric Curran at Sebring and Long Beach places the Chevrolet brand second in the standing with 12 points, seven points behind Porsche. Chevrolet was however penalised one point for waiting two races to confirm its presence in the manufacturers' championship.
Chevrolet currently leads the World Challenge record books for most manufacturer class wins, with 65, and the Corvette leads the ledger for model class victories, with 41.
GM has collected six World Challenge Manufacturers' Championships with three different brands (Chevrolet, Saturn and Cadillac) since the series began in 1990.
