The futuristic-looking Volkswagen XL1, which claims to burn as little as 0.9L/100km, will soon enter production at the Osnabrück assembly plant, according to a new press release by the German automaker. It will become the world's most fuel-efficient production car.
Using a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 47 hp two-cylinder TDI engine (half of the regular 1.6L TDI) with a 20 kW electric motor, a 7-speed DSG, and a lithium-ion battery, the Volkswagen XL1 emits just 21g/km of CO2 -- zero in full electric mode.
If necessary, the car is able to accelerate to 100 km/h in 12.7 seconds, and reach a top speed of 160 km/h (electronically limited).
Pricing and availability for all markets have yet to be announced, however.
