Home Depot and the Clean Air Foundation have launched their 7th Annual Mow Down Pollution event, Canada's largest lawnmower and trimmer recycling and rebate program. Why lawnmowers? Because many of us own a house and use gasoline-powered tools to mow their lawns. Did you know that a standard, 2-stroke gas mower can emit the same amount of common air pollutants in one hour as a new car that travels 550 kilometres? Every year in Canada, gas-powered lawn equipment releases about 80,000 tons of greenhouse gas and smog-forming emissions. That's a pretty serious environmental issue!

So, from April 19-29, 2007, Canadians who return their old, polluting gas lawnmower or trimmer at any Home Depot centre across the country will receive an instant rebate (up to $100) off the purchase of a cleaner alternative lawncare product from such brands as Black & Decker, Gardena, Neuton, MTD and Great States. Meanwhile, they will get the assurance that the Clean Air Foundation will safely recycle their old tools. Since 2001, over 12,000 lawnmowers and trimmers have been retired and permanently recycled, resulting in a 270-ton reduction in noxious emissions.
