The compact SUV market is heating up. Sought after for their car-like ride and less-than-hefty fuel consumption, they're often an ideal choice for buyers looking for the go-anywhere-anytime capability of an SUV but who don't need a huge engine or hulking, beastly Ute to get the job done.

Mercedes-Benz may be a little late to join the party, but they've just announced plans to create one such small SUV and compete with the likes of the Acura RDX and BMW X3. According to Automotive News, the latest model from the German luxury automaker is to be named the GLK.

2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class

A teaser prototype model was recently shown at a media event, and reports say that its stance is both shorter and lower than that of its big brother the GL class--despite wearing a similarly squared-off exterior. The GLK will be positioned as a small SUV as opposed to a crossover, says Mercedes.

Those in attendance report that the interior was fitted with Mercedes COMAND Plus control system alongside a screen for a navigation system. The GLK-Class will likely include only two rows of seats and will be built in Germany--where it will go on sale next year before a 2009 launch in North America.

Interested? The new GLK will likely make an appearance at the North America International Auto Show this January in Detroit.
