Because its European operations are currently weak, GM's Detroit headquarters has decided that North America won't get one of the most exciting products the global company's turned out in a long time.
That would be the Speedster, which is an excellent case of truth in marketing. The cramped, mid-engine two-seater is one of the most capable vehicles to ever leap into a corner without thought about adhesion limits.
It might be possible that we'd see Speedster on this side of the pond, but only if the European economy goes completely bust or its sportscar lovers all suddenly give up on the excitement buzz of a hot roadster.
A lovely little Astra Cabrio debuted in Geneva and it too would make a nice couple's car in Canada. Indeed, there's little about its cosmetic or equipment levels that would have to change to make the trip. Various GM executives said they were considering it, so there might be a chance.
The big Opel news is the Vectra model that's supposed to bow at Frankfurt this fall and will be the basis for Chevrolet's next entry-level car in this country.
What we won't see likely ever at all is the Lada Niva SUV replacement that GM is going to help Autovaz build in Russia.
