GM, Daimler and BMW, three of the biggest automakers in the world, have decided to halt production of their vehicles in Egypt to ensure the safety of their employees given the degeneration of the political situation.

GM spokesperson Johan Willems says the executives located in Cairo are “assessing the situation and will decide to commence normal operations once the conditions permit”.

Daimler and BMW have recalled employees as well as halted production activities.

Nissan has followed suit and closed its assembly plant, where the X-Trail is currently built, until February 3 following the anti-government demonstrations emphasizing the political unrest in Egypt. The automaker has also recalled four of its employees back to Japan.

Volkswagen has stopped delivering products, unsure if they’ll reach their destination intact.

In 2009, nearly 92,400 touring and commercial vehicles were built in Egypt according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (IOMVM)
