General Motors is reportedly looking to seal a partnership with none other than BMW, in order to remain a competitive developer of fuel-efficient vehicles and powertrains.
According to Forbes, such an alliance would allow BMW to leverage GM's expertise with extended-range electric cars like the Chevrolet Volt/Opel Ampera, while GM would take advantage of BMW's leadership in gasoline and diesel engines technology.
Both companies would minimize their technological weaknesses by utilizing their partner's strengths.
This would likely result in more fuel-efficient products from GM and BMW, increased market shares, and significantly-lower R&D costs.
A couple of roadblocks might derail any future partnership between the two automakers, however, including a direct threat to BMW models from Cadillac and Buick.
Late last month, Ford and Toyota announced a partnership aimed at jointly developing technology for hybrid trucks.
