General Motors has unveiled a redesigned infotainment user experience for its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups, marking a step forward in how the automaker integrates native software with smartphone connectivity. The system debuts on GM’s light-duty pickups later this year before expanding across the company’s broader vehicle portfolio, including gas, diesel and electric models.
Return of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
The launch follows widespread customer criticism over GM’s previous move to eliminate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its Ultium-based electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Blazer EV. The automaker has evidently heard the criticism. Rather than forcing drivers to choose between embedded software and phone projection, the new interface allows both systems to co-exist on the same screen.
Developed in collaboration with Apple and Google, the redesigned home screen features standard split-view capability. Drivers can display Apple CarPlay or Android Auto apps alongside critical vehicle data, including fuel levels, tire pressure, trailering metrics and Super Cruise status. This layout eliminates the need to constantly toggle between smartphone projection and GM’s native menus.
The 2027 Silverado and Sierra will offer up to 60 inches of combined digital display space across the dashboard. This setup includes a redesigned digital instrument cluster featuring high-contrast graphics and mode-specific layouts for off-roading, towing and hands-free driving. When Super Cruise is active, the cluster presents real-time 3D visualizations of surrounding traffic, lane markings and road objects.
Taking into account towing information
Truck-specific features adapt automatically when a trailer is attached. The interface populates dedicated trailering cards on the centre screen and instrument cluster, while integrating underbody camera views, Hitch View and a mobile app for solo trailer-light checks.
The update also brings Google’s Gemini AI into embedded applications, along with an available front-passenger screen that uses polarization tech to avoide distracting drivers when passengers are streaming video content, which they can do from apps like YouTube, Disney+ and Hulu.
While GM confirmed the scalable software architecture will eventually roll out across its broader lineup, the automaker has not clarified whether the split-screen design will bring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto back to existing or future electric models like the Equinox EV, Blazer EV or Cadillac Lyriq.
