Despite efforts to get back on track after the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan in March, Toyota's not quite there yet, and recent numbers from GM only proved their struggle.

General Motors Co. (GM) reported global sales that rose 8.9% to 4.536 million at the halfway mark (6 months), outselling Toyota (and its affiliates Lexus, Daihatsu Moto Co. And Hino Motors Ltd.) who only hit the 3.71 million mark. VW sits in second place with 4.13 million units sold in the first 6 months.

Toyota fell 23% at the half-year mark after they had to halt production after the tsunami hit in March. Hoping to enter a production recovery phase in September, it will still take several more months for sales to recover even if production goes back to normal, says Toyota.

So, for now, Toyota will watch the American giant, GM, take top spot with cars like the Cruze which was the company's top-selling car in the US in June.
