General Motors has signed an important agreement with the Canadian government in which the manufacturer promises to invest $290 million in its Ontarian plants.
GM accepted to invest $245 million in its St. Catharines plant, where a new, fuel-efficient, 6-speed automatic transmission for front-wheel drive vehicles will be assembled. The production of this transmission alone, slated to begin in April 2011, will ensure over 300 jobs.
GM also accepted to assemble a mid-size car and its hybrid version at its Oshawa plant, also recently affected by a large-scale downsizing plan. Production on the mid-size car should begin in October 2010, while that of its hybrid counterpart is slated for early 2011.
General Motors will also be investing $40 million in its Oshawa engineering centre in order to pursue advanced research and development activities in environmental technologies.
