One of the first things that you learn when you become a car owner is to regularly monitor tire pressure in order to prevent flats and/or unfortunate incidents. Since many of us are lazy by nature, we often overlook this little check-up.

Goodyear knows it, which is why engineers have developed a new Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) enabling tires to remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics.

The premise is rather simple: all components of the AMT system, including the miniaturized pump, are fully contained within the tire. Of course, that's easier said than done, but here's betting we'll all be saying one day: ''How did I survive without it all this time?''

Goodyear has yet to announce a specific date for going mainstream with self-inflating tires, but the company successfully applied for a grant from the United States and Luxemburg governments for research and development of an AMT system, so we may see it soon.
