Johnny Cecotto took the win at Hockenheim, thanks to the right tire gamble on a wet but drying track.

Cecotto started from 18th position on the grid, and was the only driver with Stéphane Richelmi to choose to start with slick tires while the track was still wet, but began to dry.

In the opening lap, Nigel Melker, who started from fourth position, moved up to the lead in the first lap ahead of poleman Giedo van der Garde and Fabio Leimer.

Leimer and van der Garde were back in the lead two laps later, but Johnny Cecotto began to take advantage of his tire choice, and overtook several cars in each lap, moving up to the lead when the drivers ahead of him stopped for their tire change.

Cecotto pulled away in front, and ended the race 9.6 seconds ahead of Leimer while Richelmi secured third position.
