Pastor Maldonado took his 6th round of the season after a dramatic finish in race 1 at Spa.

Jérôme d’Ambrosio started from pole position in front of his own crowd and pulled away in front after the start, closely followed by Pastor Maldonado. Both drivers switched positions after their pit stop, but it was Alvaro Parente, who delayed his own stop, who inherits the lead at this moment of the race.

Jérôme d’Ambrosio was forced to retire after his engine broke, and Parente was leading 23’’ ahead of Maldonado. But the Portuguese had to stop anyway, which he did three laps before the end. Maldonado was back in first position, but he had to defend against Parente, who was catching him very quickly with his fresh tires.

Finally, Parente failed to overtake Maldonado, and the championship leader took his sixth victory of the season, only two tenths of a second ahead of the Portuguese driver. Romain Grosjean, who was replacing injured Ho-Pin Tung, took third position.

Sergio Perez, who stands second in provisional classification, had a difficult race, and could only secured 7th position at the checkered flag after a drive through for pitlane speeding. But the Mexican driver will have the opportunity to take revenge in race 2, as he will start from second position. Dani Clos was involved in an accident in the first lap.
