On top of that, the hybrid powertrain yields a 20 per cent increase in fuel economy, achieving 18.6 miles per U.S. gallon on a combine city/highway cycle, compared with 15.5 mpg for the conventional V8 Durango.

Indeed, Robertson says, the application of such hybrid technology in an SUV like the Durango "results in a greater overall savings in fuel consumption than the same technology applied to a small passenger car."

Robertson points out that, "If every SUV sold in the U.S. got that kind of improved fuel economy with a hybrid powertrain, we would save 142 million gallons of gas a year," which is about 537.5 million litres.

More than that, the occupants of the hybrid-electric Durango "also enjoy a quieter, smoother ride," Robertson says, "with no sacrifices in comfort or equipment options, although the trailer-towing capability is reduced."

The gains in fuel efficiency result in part from the downsizing in the hybrid vehicle, Robertson explains. A smaller engine can be used, permitting the use of smaller, related components, including the catalytic convertor, fan and fan clutch, radiator and driveshaft. The improved fuel economy, in turn, permits the use of a smaller fuel tank (to 75.7 from 94.6 litres).

"While the Durango has the potential to become a popular, fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly SUV," Robertson says, "several challenges remain."
