Hyundai Auto Canada (HAC) announced today that the horsepower ratings on some of its vehicles have been mistakenly reported in the company's marketing materials. The error applies to the materials only and has no impact on the safety or reliability of any vehicles.

The ratings error involves a number of vehicle lines over a period of several years, with a weighted average overstatement of 3.6 horsepower.

Hyundai Auto Canada obtains the horsepower figures used in marketing materials from Hyundai Motor America. These errors occurred because Hyundai Motor America did not have an established procedure in place to verify that its preliminary horsepower figures matched the actual horsepower.

"I am very regretful for these errors and for any concerns it raises among Hyundai customers," said HAC President and CEO Steve Kelleher. "We are announcing these errors because we want our relationship with our customers, our dealers, and all our business partners to be open and honest. We are also offering our assurance that we are taking aggressive measures to prevent errors of this nature from happening again."

"As an expression of goodwill and an attempt to demonstrate how important Hyundai customers are to us, we are offering certain enhancements to those individuals whose model's horsepower ratings were misstated by more than four percent. For the 2000 model year forward we are offering a choice of three warranty-enhancement options or, for 1999 model year and earlier vehicles, a 3-year unlimited kilometre roadside assistance coverage," said Kelleher. The warranty enhancement options for 2000 model year forward include:

  • Extending Roadside Assistance Benefit from 3 years/unlimited km to 6 years/unlimited km. or
  • Extending New Vehicle Limited Warranty from 3 years/60,000 km to 4 years/80,000 km or
  • Extending Powertrain Limited Warranty from 5 years/100,000 km to 6 years/120,000 km
