Al Unser Jr has been suspended from his role with the IndyCar Series after being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in Albuquerque.
The incident is the third time the double CART champion has been arrested for driving while impaired since 2002.
In recent years, Unser Jr, had been working with the championship as a driver coach and assisting in race control.
"IndyCar is aware of the charges and will not be commenting at this time," said a statement from the series. "Al Unser Jr has been suspended indefinitely and relieved of his duties in race control, pending further investigation."
Al Unser Jr has had his share of problems with the law, having been also charged in the past with domestic violence in a well-publicised divorce from his former wife.
