The first Lotus V-6 engine has been installed in the 2012 Dallara Lotus test car in preparation for its initial track test scheduled for January 13.

Personnel of the HVM, Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, Bryan Herta Autosport (the three Lotus works teams) installed the Judd-produced 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine in the chassis and confirmed internal systems operation and checked body fit.

The initial on-track test of the Lotus car to be driven by Simona de Silvestro is scheduled for Jan. 13 at Palm Beach International Raceway. The Lotus test car will be joined by the Chevrolet and Honda test cars in Florida.

Canadian Alex Tagliani told Auto123.com that he would drive the Lotus test car January 23 and 24.

The sole IZOD IndyCar Series preseason Open Test is scheduled for March 5-6 and 8-9 at Sebring. The season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is March 25.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a little bit more than a shakedown on the 13th and 14th. We’ll then head over to Sebring and put a little bit more performance on it. It wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation of all three teams,” said Olivier Picquenot, the IZOD IndyCar Series manager for Lotus Motorsport to Indycar.com.

Lotus Motorsport announced last May that Engine Developments Ltd. – the company of John Judd that has Indy car racing experience dating to the 1980s with a V-8 – would develop the new engine.

A pre-production unit will be utilized in the initial testing, with additional engines currently undergoing bench testing in England.
