They're far from being the world's largest or most popular automaker, but Suzuki has four decades of history in building very capable off-road vehicles that are put to work the world over. A new concept from the Japanese automaker will demonstrate this rich history of mud-slinging to the public at this weeks North American International Auto Show.

This one's called the X-HEAD, and Suzuki coins it as a completely contemporary vision of off-roading combined with purpose-built modules and an undeniable cool factor. If the look is any indication, they've put their money where their mouths are- as the X-HEAD looks instantly rugged and capable. It's sort of like a toy Tonka Truck, but for grownups.

X-HEAD is a cross-utility vehicle that's built to offer its owners some serious off-road performance. The concept, which would compete with vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and various Hummer products, was first shown publicly at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

The machine comes with a variety of add-on packages that allow it to be used as a comfortable camper, a street-smart urban cruiser or a dedicated search-and-rescue type vehicle. X-HEAD boasts a full complement of off-road hardware including limited-slip differentials, and power comes from a dual-cam four-cylinder engine mated to a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

"Suzuki Auto is pleased to be a part of NAIAS 2008 on the heels of another year of record-setting sales, which can be credited, in large part, to our versatile and award-winning products along with growing brand familiarity," said Mark Harano, president of American Suzuki Automotive Operations.
