Helio Castroneves was leading the IndyCar race at Belle Isle and he still had 20 laps to go before winning his second event of the season but, out of nowhere, according to the Brazilian, he was handed out a penalty that ultimately gave the win to Justin Wilson.
After a restart from a caution period, the Penske driver blocked Justin Wilson almost into the wall and that move was deem illegal by the officials and Castroneves was instructed, by competition president Brian Bernhart, to give his place to the Newman-Haas-Lanigan driver.
After surrendering the lead, Castroneves was never in a position to challenge Wilson and he had to settle for second place. For the Briton it was his first ever IndyCar win.
Heading into the last race of the season, Castroneves is still 30 points behind series leader Scott Dixon. Had he won that gap would have been reduced to only 20.
