Few classic muscle cars come prettier than this 1962 Chevy Impala Super Sport, probably the reason they're so popular among black market collectors, and therefore thieves. (Photo: General Motors)

What's next? Model year 1958 to 1967 Chevrolet Impalas are popular to 5.6%, while the same brand's 1968 through '69 Camaro lure in 4.7% of car-nappers.

The 5th most popular classic to steel doesn't even have four wheels. Classic Harley-Davidson motorcycles, especially those made between 1941 and 1974, are literally hot property at 4.4% of all vintage vehicles stolen.

If you happen to own one or more of these collectible vehicles, keep them under tight surveillance. As it seems it's just a matter of time until the unscrupulous try to get their hands on yours.

Only 1968 and '69 Camaros hold the 4th most popular stolen ranking, but don't take your guard down if yours just happens to be a 1967 or early '70s split bumper. (Photo: General Motors)

And also, don't let your guard down if your classic doesn't happen to fall into the most popular model years of the cars stolen. If it's a popular model, no doubt it will be targeted by those trying to sell it to black market collectors.

Why some car enthusiasts are willing to pay premium dollars for stolen merchandise is difficult to understand by those that want to be able to license and drive their classics. Hot cars are of little more use than lifesize models.
