It happened on November 22nd: John F. Kennedy shot in his limo

Fifty years ago today, U.S. president John Fitzgerald Kennedy was fatally shot by a sniper while travelling with his wife in a limo that was part of a presidential motorcade through downtown Dallas. A first bullet hit him in the neck, and a second struck his head. Kennedy was pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital 30 minutes later.

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States aboard Air Force One on the return trip to the White House.

Lee Harvey Oswald, a former Marine, was arrested and officially charged with the murder. He was assassinated just two days later in the garage of Dallas police as he was being transferred to the county jail.
