On October 26, 1997 Jacques Villeneuve clinched his first and only Formula 1 World Championship title. Driving his Renault-powered Williams, Villeneuve survived a mid-race collision with his arch rival Michael Schumacher, let the two McLaren-Mercedes of David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen move ahead him in the closing stages of the race, and finished third, scoring enough points to take the title.
Today, almost exactly ten years after, Villeneuve is about to contest his fourth NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. What a change this is! The Canadian champion is back behind the wheel of the #27 Toyota Tundra truck of Bill Davis Racing.
The free practice sessions for the Atlanta event are held today. Qualifying and the race - named the EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200 - will be staged tomorrow, Saturday.
The Atlanta track is a 1,54-mile oval with 24-degree banked corners.
On the web site of Bill David Racing, Jacques Villeneuve gave his comments about Atlanta Motor Speedway:
"It's a fast track, so it'll be very different than Martinsville! Although this season is about gaining experience, I'm a racer, so a good result would be a bonus. I'll be out to cover as much mileage as possible, to learn as much as I can, and to keep building for 2008. Right now, BDR has a strong package, and I'll hopefully get to run some laps with Mike [Skinner, teammate] and Johnny [Benson, teammate]. If I can do that, I'm sure we can do well."
