Former Formula 1 World Champion explained us why he will compete in a round of the Copa Caixa, the Brazilian stock car series on August 7 in Sao Paolo.
Villeneuve will be driving the No. 27 Chevrolet sponsored by Shell V-Power in that event which will be held two weeks before the Napa 200 NASCAR Nationwide race in Montreal.
“Yes, we can say that, it’s for me a way in get back in the grove and to put some more experience under my belt,” Villeneuve told Auto123.com on Friday.
“The Copa Caixa is a very big series in South America. The cars are powerful and fast. It’s a good way to enjoy some additional track time prior to the Montreal race. I also go in Brazil to meet with some major sponsors,” Villeneuve said.
The former Indy 500 winner also told Auto123.com that he has declined the invitation to compete in the Armor All 600 race of the Australian V8 series in October. The Canadian contested that event last year.
“I went there last year to learn more about that series and to try to open some doors to do more V8 Supercar races in the future. But that did not materialized,” Villeneuve told us.
“To do that race means that you have to spend 10 days in the country, doing a lot of public appearances and PR stuff. It’s very long. And finally, you don’t get to drive that much. So I decided not to return in Australia this fall. Instead I will focus on trying to get a ride in NASCAR here in North America,” Villeneuve added.
The Canadian will contest the Montreal NASCAR Nationwide race in the No. 22 Dodge of Penske Racing.
