The traditional indoor karting race organised at the end of each season by Philippe Streiff made a return to the Paris-Bercy sports centre this past weekend. The the big news of the event was the usage for the first time of fully electric karts.
Streiff did not manage to attracts the big F1 names such as Vettel, Hamilton, Button or Alonso. However, he convinced the top French driver to compete such as Sébastien Loeb, Jean-Éric Vergne, Romain Grosjean, Sébastien Bourdais, Jules Bianchi, Franck Montagny, Stéphane Sarrazin, Romain Dumas and Sébastien Ogier.
The chassis were provided by Sodikart. The electric engine is a AC 65 volts with an internal rotor putting out some 20kW, equivalent to that of a classic, thermal racing kart
The batteries come in two packs and are installed on either side of the kart. They use the NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese) technology, which is well-known for its high discharge capacity. In racing configuration their autonomy is 15 minutes, more than enough for the races in Bercy, with a 30-minute recharge period.
The closing laps of the big final are simply breathtaking. It proves that electric racing machines can be everything but boring!
