This is where disappointment often resides, but not with the Evoque.

The production car is astonishingly close to the LRX concept; the accuracy of reproduction is one of the best I’ve seen. And if the faithfulness the Evoque holds to its LRX beginnings applies equally to the 21st century reinterpretation of the legendary Defender – known in concept mode as the Land Rover DC100 – we are in for another spectacular treat.

The DC100 concept wowed the crowd at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. Two versions exist: the DC100, which is a hardtop version of the venerable Defender, and the DC100 Sport, which is a sleeker two-seat convertible iteration. variation décapotable deux places.

Both DC100 variants will house cutting-edge technology to aid drivers with the “go anywhere” ability that Land Rover has built its reputation on. The vehicles will also exude green beneath their colourful paint schemes with fuel-efficient engines and recyclable materials.

Land Rover is targeting 2015 as the year of the DC100, which is expected to revive the Defender nameplate when formally launched.

So there you have it. Even companies as dignified and restrained as Land Rover need to invent and reinvent their image. The Evoque in my mind is the invention of a new corporate image; one that’s as daring and “out there” as my bro’s afro.

The DC100 – well that’s the reinvention of an image. To Land Rover loyalists, the Defender is the fundamental Land Rover – the foundation upon which the company stands. Such expectations raise the reinvention bar.

The Evoque was a radical venture that was entirely new and couldn’t be measured against a predecessor. The DC100, on the other hand, will be measured against the Defender of past for its off-road capability and sheer ruggedness.

The propensity to compare new against old makes the art of reinvention far more complicated and risk-laden than simple invention. Of course neither undertaking is a sure thing, however, with looks as cool as that of the Evoque a lot of shortcomings can be overlooked, which is similar to real life. A reflection of human vanity I presume.

I really enjoyed my week behind the wheel of Land Rover’s new image. It’s the sportiest Range Rover by far, and like all Land Rovers, it’s not afraid to get dirty. Furthermore, it’s the most fuel efficient Range Rover ever.

Stinginess with fuel has never been a Land Rover credo.

The fact that the Evoque, a fully-capable, premium-level off-road vehicle, has secured fuel consumption ratings of 11.4L/100km and 7.1L/100km city and highway driving respectively. Those are commendable numbers, and clearly a priority in Land Rover’s new direction. More importantly though, nothing clunked.

Despite my mechanic’s predilection for sarcasm, I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing.
