Kuno Wittmer, from Montréal, has been elected with his team SRT to take part in this year's Le Mans 24 Hours, in June. He shared his reaction with Auto123.com.
30-year-old Wittmer, who has been an official SRT driver since 2009, will compete in the ALMS championship this season, aboard the new works Chrysler Viper GTS-R. It will be his first experience at Le Mans.
"Being an ALMS, and a works team, we were quite confident about our invitation for Le Mans," Wittmer told Auto123.com. "But you never know! We waited until February 1st for the confirmation, and got the news during the ACO’s press conference on Friday morning."
"For me, it's really a dream come true," Wittmer added. "I’ve been racing for 16 years, and dreaming about Le Mans since my debuts. The emotion is unbelivable. And we are not at the starting grid yet !"
Very few Canadian drivers have taken part in the great endurance race. Only about 12. Kuno Wittmer will be the first French Canadian driver since Jacques Villeneuve (2007 and 2008) to take the start.
"To be one of the few Canadian drivers to drive there is a real honour," Wittmer added. "I’m so proud!"
Prior to Le Mans, Kumo Wittmer will get to work on his craft in the ALMS, starting with the Sebring 12 Hours in March.
