The 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve is back behind the wheel of a race car this weekend as he competes in one category of the Legends of Motorsport event at the Mont-Tremblant road circuit in Quebec.
Villeneuve is driving a McLaren F1 GTR, a car that competed in the Le Mans 24 Hours in the ‘90s.
The car is owned by Lawrence Stroll, the businessman who revamped the Mont-Tremblant circuit.
This car is entered in the Can-Am/Group C/GTP category.
“This historic car is worth several millions of dollars,” said Villeneuve.
“The idea is to have fun driving it, but I am not pushing it to the limits. It’s too easy to hit the wall when you get carried away and forget this is a piece of history. It is a little bit heavy and not extremely precise to drive, but it is a lot more nimble than a NASCAR racer!”
Auto123.com also took this photo of two cars that have been driven by the late Gilles Villeneuve. The two cars were put side by side for just a few seconds, and we were lucky to capture the moment.
It shows Villeneuve’s first single seater, the Jean-Pierre St-Jacques-built Formula Ford 1600, and Gilles’ 1980 Ferrari 312T5.
Action resumes tomorrow Sunday with the finals held in the afternoon.
