After having updated its definition of low-speed vehicles (LSVs), the federal government has finally authorized manufacturers of small electric utility vehicles to market their products and to offer them to companies specializing in landscaping and property maintenance. These LSVs can be safely used in controlled, low-speed environments where the risks of colliding with a conventional vehicle are limited, namely university campuses, parks and retirement communities.
While conventional motor vehicles must meet around 40 safety standards, it's a whole other story with low-speed vehicles. According to federal regulations, LSVs must be powered by an electric engine, produce no emissions and travel on four wheels at a maximum speed of 32 to 40 km/h. Transport Canada obviously encourages car manufacturers to design electric vehicles that meet the same standards as conventional vehicles while offering the same level of protection, producing no emissions and having no impact on the quality of the air.
