recently brought Maserati back under its control to be aligned with Alfa Romeo. The twelve-cylinder masterpiece slated for use is currently found in Ferrari's big grand tourer, the 612 Scaglietti. The motor is significantly more powerful than the current V8, producing 540-horsepower at 7,200 rpm, and 434 lb-ft of torque at 5,250 rpm.

However impressive these figures are, they probably won't make it to production - Maserati is said to be tuning the motor to develop better low-end torque and response, more suited to the luxurious characteristics of the Quattroporte. This will

most likely mean a decline in both power and torque ratings, but even if outputs are slashed the Quattroporte V12 should still be able to reach 60 mph in the mid-to-low four second range.

Another new engine may be on the horizon for the Quattroporte, but of a completely different sort. The technology-sharing deal between VAG and Maserati could lead to the Italian luxury sedan receiving the VW 5.0-liter V10 turbodiesel. This engine, while not high on the list of priorities for Maserati aficionados, would be key to improving sales in Western Europe where diesel-powered luxury vehicles are gaining in popularity.
