Maserati's stunning new two seater Spyder was revealed for the first time in the UK today.

As the covers were pulled off the gorgeous convertible sports car at the annual Scottish Motor Show in Glasgow, Maserati announced the UK price of the new car, which goes on sale early next year.

With an on-the-road cost of £68,750 for the Cambiocorsa version, the price of the new Spyder compares favourably with its main rivals, the Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet Tiptronic and the Jaguar XKR 4.0-litre Convertible.

However, the new Maserati, with its winning blend of quality, high performance and desirability, outperforms all of its rivals on power, acceleration and top speed.

Fitted with an all-new 4244 cc lightweight alloy V8 petrol engine producing 390 bhp and 451 Nm torque, the new Spyder is capable of a top speed, where permitted, of 175 mph and a zero to 60 mph acceleration time of just 4.9 seconds.

Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro, of the famed Ital Design studio, the Spyder is the first new Maserati to be developed entirely under the supervision of company owners Ferrari.

A radical innovation on the Maserati Spyder is the electronically actuated six-ratio transmission ? "Cambiocorsa" ? which offers computerised gear selection through actuation "paddle" levers fitted behind the steering wheel.

The "Cambiocorsa" transmission, which is a product of Ferrari's Formula 1 experience, has four specific modes: Normal, Sport, Auto and Low Grip. These modes are linked to the electronic traction control system and, where fitted, the variable "Skyhook" suspension setting option. This allows the driver to select the optimum combination of transmission, suspension and traction settings to match conditions and driving requirements.
