Excitement barely contained

With only a month to go, Mazda has begun teasing sports car fans the world over with a profile picture of their upcoming Sports Car Concept.

Car and performance driving enthusiasts from everywhere, throw me in the mix, are already speculating like mad. Is this the next RX-7? The replacement to the RX-8? Better? Difficult to imagine but I thought I’d let you jump to conclusions yourself…

Here’s an excerpt of the press release:

“The design of the sports car concept to be unveiled in Tokyo is modern yet maintains a sense of lineage and authenticity, appearing almost to condense Mazda’s entire history of sports car development into a single model.

In line with the company’s theme for the Tokyo Motor Show this year, “Accelerate toward our dreams,” Mazda will make an appeal for the brand’s unique approach to driving pleasure. In addition to the sports car concept, Mazda KOERU will be on display along with new-generation models featuring SKYACTIV Technologies and KODO—Soul of Motion design. A motorsports exhibit featuring racing-spec Roadsters and the Cosmo Sport will complement a heritage display showing Mazda’s history of convention-defying engineering.”

The sentences “sense of lineage and authenticity, appearing almost to condense Mazda’s entire history of sports car development into a single model” and “an appeal for the brand’s unique approach to driving pleasure” say many things without betraying much.

The image does tell us that this will be a real coupe with a hatchback-style trunk; both unlike the RX-8, both like the last FD RX-7. Wide-ish and squat are two other words that come to mind after staring at the picture for a moment. One way or another, Mazda’s not made a mistake in the last few years. Most recently, the new MX-5 clearly demonstrates that the Hiroshima based company knows exactly what it’s doing.

What do you guys think?
