Mercedes shows off new ML SUV for 2006

Inside, acompletely new interior features a ''sport-oriented instrument panel, amulti-function steering wheel, rich materials and improved spaciousness for allfive seating positions.'' 

By comparison,there are over 50 mm of additional front leg room, as well as more rear-passengerknee and leg room.

A lot of workhas gone into making the ML's interior much better, since that is the currentmodel's primary weakness. So, according to Mercedes in Germany, thenew ML has ''higher-quality materials, more pleasant touch and feelcharacteristics, and significantly improved spaciousness for all the vehicle'spassengers.''

The cushions andbackrests of the rear seats in the 2006 ML are split 63:37 and can be foldeddown. Removable cushions can be ordered as an option, creating a level loadingsurface of 2,100 mm through the rear of the car. Maximum load capacity standsat 2050 litres, exceeding that offered by its predecessor by 30 litres.

State-of-the-artassistance systems ''more familiar from luxury-class Mercedes models help torelieve the stress on the driver, raise comfort and further improve safety,''says the German office. The New Jersey office is not yet willing or able to say whichwill be available as standard or optional equipment.

The 2006 ML willmark the debut of a new active head restraint system that should provideincreased protection against neck injuries in the event of a rearcollision. 

The new ML alsoincludes adaptive two-stage airbags for the driver and front passenger, curtainside airbags and belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seatingpositions.

Prices have notyet been revealed, but the current ML350 costs about $52,000 and the currentML500 retails for about $67,500.
