Earlier this year, MINI and John Cooper Works announced that they'd join forces in the name of creating some quick and capable little cars. The partnership sees the manufacturer joined by a legendary tuner, and both will work on the same page to create a distinctive and exciting brand.

John Cooper Works will become a MINI sub-brand, arriving in Canada this summer. The MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper S Clubman models will be available with a high-performance package, their names expanded to the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman.

On board each is a 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine that's turbocharged and direct-injected for a peak of 207 horsepower and 192 lb.-ft of torque available from 1,850 RPM. The engine torque output can be temporarily increased to 207 lb.-ft, courtesy of an overboost function that's enabled by trick software tuning. Owners of either the standard or clubman models can expect 0-60 in the mid six-second range.

Of course, the engine is only part of the equation- and the John Cooper Works models also feature upgraded brakes and suspension, lightened wheels, a high-flow exhaust system and modified six-speed manual transmission.

"The new MINI John Cooper Works brand brings MINI's legendary racing and high-performance driving relationship to a new level." said Stephen McDonnell, Director of MINI Canada. "The MINI John Cooper Works and John Cooper Works Clubman models will appeal to the true driving enthusiast and make a very exciting statement."

More detailed Canadian specifications and pricing will be announced closer to launch.
