The new Explorer Sport Trac follows the same recipe laid out by the original Sport Trac: an Explorer front-end with a pick-up rear-end. Until 2005, the truck was based on the previous generation Explorer and Explorer Sport. For 2007, the new pick-up uses the same front fascia and chassis as the 2006 Explorer SUV including its standard chromed grille which itself is inspired by the F-150.

The box of the Sport Trac is chalk-full of tricks including three integrated cargo bins. These compartments are integrated into the floor and feature drain plugs in case they are used to store wet items. The box itself is 4 ½ feet long and altogether, has a 1,450 lbs payload capacity.

Powering the Sport Trac are a 210 hp 4.0L V6 or a 292 hp 4.6L V8. The V6 receives a 5-speed automatic while the V8 gets a 6-speed automatic transmission. The truck is delivered as a RWD vehicle however Ford's Control Trac AWD system is optional.
